The Host/Pathogen Interaction Programme is wholly funded by the Wellcome Trust and is centred around sleeping sickness in cattle in Africa. Trypanosomiasis in cattle is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma vivax and carried by the tsetse fly. An area of Africa, often called 'the tsetse belt', covers approximately ten million square kilometres and within this area trypanomiasis, or sleeping sickness, is endemic. This disease is a major constraint on cattle production which is the main source of income for many small farmers.
